Common Dangers for Cats

As much as we love (and often spoil) our cats, there are some common household items that can be very dangerous to them!

Here are some of the things we see most often in our clinic:

  • Mouldy food can produce toxins which affects the nervous system in cats. Symptoms can be severe and range from mild muscle tremors to hypersalivation, agitation, seizures, overheating and even death.
  • If your cats eat lilies, or even just come into close contact with lilies, it can be extremely dangers and fatal if left untreated.
  • Chocolate, onions and garlic, grapes and Xylitol: These are dangerous if cats eat them, just like dogs!
  • Ibuprofen & paracetamol are both toxic to cats.
  • Some essential oils, such as tea tree oil, can cause poisoning from ingestion or topical exposure. Liquid and plug-in air fresheners may contain essential oils as well as corrosive substances that can cause poisoning and burns.

If your cat has had access to any of these, please get them to the vet immediately. We are not going to judge, and we are not concerned with what might be legal or not, we just want your pet to survive and recover!
